What to Expect: This class is for cancer survivors, their caregivers, friends, and support network. The expectation is to focus on breathwork as well as the release of tension and relaxation of muscles and/or tissue that can become tight after oncology treatments and/or surgeries. Physical side effects from treatment as well as mental side effects from oncology diagnosis can be positively affected through gentle stretching and meditation. Studies show that yoga can help lower stress, anxiety, pain, fatigue, depression, and insomnia as well as reduce risk for cardiovascular disease and hypertension. This particular workshop will incorporate education on anatomy of the body including the lymphatic system. This can help provide a better understanding of why they are feeling what they are feeling after oncology treatments. We will also discuss techniques on mindfulness and body awareness. No yoga experience is needed or expected. This class is to accommodate everyone and all asanas (poses) will be explained in full detail. There will be time at the end of class to ask questions and talk with others who may be sharing a similar life experience.

Meet your host, Katie:
Katie is an Occupational Therapist (17 years experience) with an extensive understanding of anatomy, body mechanics, and a holistic perspective when treating patients. This perspective coupled with her passion for seeing others succeed with their personal goals aids in attending individually to class participants' needs. Katie became a certified lymphedema therapist (CLT) in 2008 and LANA certified (2015) followed by her oncology rehabilitation certification (PoRI) in 2017. Katie found yoga to be beneficial in her personal life. She noticed she would leave yoga class with a clearer mind, more patience off the mat, and increased strength/flexibility. She has since received her 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certification from The Zen Zone in 2021. After certification she began incorporating yoga in her treatments with patients. Patient feedback has been extremely positive with patients reporting benefits both physically and mentally.
Katie enjoys the journey of practicing and teaching yoga with a focus on breath to movement. Katie incorporates a carefully curated library of music to aid in class participant's flow, release, and end of class mindfulness. Her goal for each yoga class is to educate participants on anatomy and how to lessen barriers from physical and mental side effects of oncology diagnosis and treatments. She wishes for each participant to be able to connect with their individual wants of tomorrow at the end of each class.
Katie is a wife, a blessed mother to 3 human kids and 1 puppy. When Katie is not shuttling her kids around, she enjoys traveling and watching the sunrise.
